What are dōtaku (ritual bells)?
During the Yayoi period, which lasted from around 300 BCE to 300 CE, the ancient Japanese began making objects out of bronze and iron for the first time. One of the earliest objects made out of bronze is a dōtaku (ritual bell). This video explains what a dōtaku is and how it might have functioned in an early agricultural society. We also explore the significance of the pictorial designs seen on some of the bells, which give us insight into life during the Yayoi period.
