What is the Adoration of the Magi? | Gentile da Fabriano's Altarpiece
The Christian Bible tells us that wise men, or Magi, from the east came to pay their respects to the newborn King of the Jews, an episode known as the Adoration of the Magi. The birth of Jesus Christ, the Christian savior, was big news for the ancient world.
Italian renaissance artist Gentile da Fabriano depicts this scene in an opulent altarpiece made for the richest man in Florence, Pala Strozzi. This video explores this work of art, known as the Strozzi Altarpiece, and the meaning of the subject it depicts.
