What is a traditional Chinese ink painting?
This video explores a famous traditional Chinese ink painting, Ni Zan's Rongxi Studio, from the 14th-century Yuan dynasty. We use it to discuss traditional Chinese ink painting techniques and materials. Ni Zan is considered one of the most influential painters in Chinese history, and he lived during the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty. Rongxi Studio is a representative example of traditional Chinese ink painting. We explore the materials used to create this painting (and other Chinese ink paintings) and the formats used in traditional Chinese ink painting (hanging scroll, handscrolls, etc.), and then discuss Ni Zan’s distinctive artistic style.
