The Reduction Firing Process Behind Neolithic Blackware
Speaker: Dr. Cortney Chaffin Kim
Innovative technology
This video discusses the reduction firing process, one of the most innovative technological achievements in the history of ceramics. In China, the technique was used during the Neolithic period to create thin-walled (eggshell-thin) vessels, including an assortment of elegant drinking cups. The technique transforms red clay into black through a sophisticated kiln process.
